To the delight of Nike Sportswear and OG Nike Basketball ‘heads alike, Nike revived the Air Raid in an OG black/gray earlier this year — and now the chunky, cross-strapped sneaker is set to return in its famous “Urban Jungle Gym” colorway. First released in 1993 to accompany Spike Lee‘s “Live Together, Play Together” campaign, the “Urban Jungle Gym” promotes unity, peace and a love of hoops through its richly-colored accents.
Black and dark gray nubuck and ballistic mesh coat the upper’s base layer and its overlays, making for true-to-the-original tones that were largely absent from 2014’s retro edition. Criss-crossing midfoot straps are done up in black and boast yellow contrast stitching plus a multi-colored embroidered peace sign. The shoe’s pièce de résistance, however, is its colorful midsole pattern that blends black, gray, blue, yellow red and green.
This colorful assemblage is also repeated, albeit in smaller fashion, on the large fabric tongue tag. Finishing touches are provided by playful heel tabs, a recognizable “For Outdoor Use Only” graphic on the heel, tonal Air Raid branding on the straps’ Velcro anchors and sturdy black rubber outsoles.
The Nike Air Raid “Urban Jungle Gym” is set to release in the US and Europe via the Nike webstore and retailers like Foot Locker on November 21, then hit Asian outposts on December 1. The MSRP is set at $140 USD.
