Things We Saw Today: I'm Obsessed With This Intentionally Hideous Ad for Nike Shoes - The Mary Sue

brande.indah.link

A tweet calls out Nike ugly Nike sneakers with a funny picture of a dog

Several times on Twitter I’ve been served an ad that stopped my scrolling thumb in mid-motion. Offered for sale is a pair of Nike sneakers so bulbous, so heinous, that it defies all logic to sell them, let alone feature them with ongoing paid promotion.

I’m forced to conclude at this juncture that the ad is intentionally misleading and is there to drill consciousness of the shoes into the masses via a sort of reverse psychology. I never think about Nike shoes, and now I think about these all the time.

Curious to witness the reactions to these horror-shoes (Women’s Nike Air Max Vivas, to be precise), as I imagine others are as well, I often click through to see what folks are saying whenever the ad appears on my feed. The ad features the ratio effect, with thousands of comments in comparison to retweets and likes (at the moment, there are more than 3k comments, 1k retweets, and 2.6k “likes”). As Dictionary.com defines getting ratioed, “This means people are objecting to the tweet and considering its content bad.”

Amid the sarcastic and confused replies the sneakers generate on Twitter, however, there are always several users who point out that the picture is actually optimized to be as unappealing as possible. If you view the same shoes for sale on Nike’s website, they are not so bizarre—in fact, they might even be normal-ish!

But in the ad, they’re shot with a fish-eye lens that wildly distorts their proportions and leaves them looking, as one person noted to perfection, “like a dog that accidentally ate a bee.”

Nike, a world-famous brand with a valuation of $34 billion dollars, can more than afford the best in class photography and advertising services. They are, in fact, famed for their advertisements that made them such a household name in the first place. Are there many more well-known slogans than “Just Do It” or instantly recognizable symbols than the Nike swoop? There are not.

And so I cannot imagine that anything gets promoted under the Nike name that hasn’t been scrupulously designed and tested and maybe even focus-grouped. That’s what makes the terrible and strange photo chosen for these shoes so intriguing. Was there an ad sales meeting where the pitch was, “Okay, guys—stay with me here—but what if we made the shoes look absolutely awful for social media?”

At this point, there’s no other conclusion I can reach than that the ad was purposefully designed to illicit a disdainful reaction. So disdainful, in fact, that you end up reading the Twitter replies, retweeting it with “WTF” (there are more than 900 quote Tweets of the original, mostly expressing horror), and thinking about these sneakers in the dark of night when you’re trying to fall asleep.

On the extreme off-chance that a mistake happened and a bad picture was accidentally first used for the ad, it would have been fast removed. Instead, I keep seeing this promotion in my Twitter feed, where it surely has a significant ad spend fuelling it. The initial Tweet was made in March and is still going strong. Is someone staring at the interaction numbers at Nike HQ and whispering, “Yes, more fish-eye lenses,” even as we speak?

Good ads can be witty or silly or feature famous people or talking frogs, but it’s hard for me to recall another instance where it appears the product for sale is being purposefully presented in a negative light for the sake of engagement. And so I have to doff my cap to Nike for this one. That knee-jerk reaction of scorn and puzzlement has now evolved to a place where I find myself saying, “What if I owned the fish-eye lens shoes? What then?”

If an ad’s purpose is to make you aware of a product, this more than succeeds. And it’s likely selling the sneakers, too, or other pairs on Nike’s website when the morbidly curious click through.

I am not the only one who finds myself simultaneously repelled by the shoes and yet—and yet.

While the shoes have repulsed some, they also have their established fans:

And while this is a common sentiment—

something about the tactic is definitely working. The pair featured in the ad, of the shade not-so-succinctly listed as “Black/Dark Citron/Green Abyss/Plum Dust,” is sold out in most sizes, in contrast to the majority of other colors the sneakers come in.

Indeed, the marketing being “off” seems to be the point, and I can’t help being riveted by that.

It’s probably a good thing I cannot spend $140 on sneakers and have a strong aversion to Nike’s labor practices. In another universe I might end up owning the fish-eye shoes because the ad is so weirdly bewitching. Let’s take a journey through some of the horrified, angry, hilarious, and overall chaotic responses this unusual advertisement has brought forth unto the world.

The ad has even driven some public figures to question whether the sneakers really exist. I assure you ma’am, they do.

They are real, they are not spectacular, and they haunt me daily. And yet, even now, I cannot take this final step:

The mystery of this horrible ad that seems created to be horrible brings me too much intrigue and fascination. May these fish-eye distorted, bee-stung shoes live forever on my timeline.

Is Nike Stock a Buy? - The Motley Fool

brande.indah.link

Nike (NYSE:NKE) is a juggernaut when it comes to athletic apparel and footwear. The Oregon-based company recorded sales of $37.4 billion in the last fiscal year and sports a current market capitalization north of $200 billion, making it a megacap stock.

But the stock is down 3% year to date, and the company is facing some near-term headwinds that are having a meaningful impact on its business. Despite this, let's see if Nike is still a solid investment.

Nike campus headquarters

Recent performance

During Q3 2021, which ended Feb. 28th, Nike recorded overall sales growth of 3% year over year, missing analyst expectations. The soft performance was due to a 10% drop in revenue in North America, a division that represents more than a third of Nike's business.

The company said the poor showing domestically was because of "supply chain challenges, including global container shortages and U.S. port congestion, impacting the flow of inventory and timing of wholesale shipments." Business leaders in various industries are voicing the same concerns, so this is not a problem that only Nike is facing. CFO Matt Friend mentioned that the company expects a more consistent flow of inventory this quarter.

Nike's profits over the last few years have stagnated, primarily due to continued investments in technology, as well as higher product and operating costs. Investors should definitely keep an eye on margin trends going forward. As a larger chunk of Nike's business goes digital (which I discuss below) and the company starts to take advantage of and scale these investments, earnings should follow suit.

Management is still confident in the long-term trajectory of the business. Over time, expectations of high-single-digit revenue growth and midteens earnings per share (EPS) growth remain intact.

Digital capabilities

As we moved through the pandemic, Nike's investments in technology and its continued transformation into a digital-first company were on full display. This only boosts the already-powerful brand the business has, and the momentum is still there.

In the most recent quarter, digital sales jumped 59%, and that's following impressive performance in Q2 (up 84%) and Q1 (up 82%) of this fiscal year. Revenue from digital channels now exceeds 35% of Nike's business, well on the way to achieving the eventual goal of a 50% mix.

Nike saw more than a 60% increase in monthly engaged users on its apps in Q3, and that's resulting in more buying. A competitive strength is the SNKRS app, which the company uses to engage more deeply with its most loyal followers.

With the sports world back in full swing, the awareness, exposure, and recognition of Nike's brand should only expand. Strategic collaborations, like the recent NOCTA collection with rapper Drake, further enhance the Swoosh and demonstrate the company's innovative culture.

Growth in greater China

The greater China segment registered revenue growth of 51% in the quarter, with footwear and apparel performing similarly. It's clear this region is vital to Nike's ambitions, but recent political turmoil has put a damper on the situation.

Diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and China over the latter's alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region have resulted in the former instituting sanctions. Nike is one of the Western brands facing boycotts in the country, and Adrienne Yih, an analyst at Barclays (NYSE:BCS), lowered her sales outlook in the region for the current quarter and next fiscal year.

She now forecasts revenue in greater China of $1.8 billion (down from $2.3 billion) in Q4 and $8.9 billion (down from $9.4 billion) in fiscal year 2022. This is certainly something to keep an eye on in the months ahead, although ultimately it may prove to be a temporary speed bump.

The takeaway

Nike has been a winner for a long time, and its current issues won't derail the company. Shareholders will continue to have much to cheer about as the business makes progress on its long-term goals while leaning heavily on its digital ecosystem.

The company has paid out a dividend that has increased every year for 19 straight years. And in Q4, management expects to resume share repurchases. But with a forward price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of 44, the stock doesn't look cheap.

However, if investors are seeking a low-risk and steady-growth name to buy, you can't do much better than Nike.

Samsung Confirms Serious Galaxy S21 Problem - Forbes

brande.indah.link

Samsung has confirmed a serious problem with the Galaxy S21 that has been causing significantly reduced camera performance.

MORE FROM FORBESGoogle Reveals Essential New Google Photos Changes

The problem causes some users to suffer noticeable operational lag when operating the camera. According to a report by SamMobile, the issue has been found in Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra models and occurs when zooming as well as switching between camera modes.

Many users report no-such problems, but an official Samsung statement, spotted by serial leaker @FrontTron, confirms the issue is real and that a fix is in the works.

According to the statement (translated by Google):

“I’m in charge of the camera.  First of all, we apologize for the inconvenience of using it.  In the case of insufficient memory or operator resources in certain paths including portrait mode, we have confirmed that a lag occurs, and modifications were made in the June SW Update.”

While this leaves Samsung with a month-long window to prepare the update, June is only a few hours away so let’s hope the fix is pushed out to affected users as soon as possible.

Is the Samsung Galaxy A52 waterproof? - XDA Developers

brande.indah.link

Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy A52 series in a separate Galaxy Unpacked event in March, together with the Galaxy A72. Samsung’s Galaxy A series smartphones are the company’s central budget lineups that help stave off competition from fierce Chinese smartphone companies. While the Galaxy A series continues to target the budget and mid-range segments of the smartphone market, Samsung slowly trickles down some of its premium features to sweeten its cheaper offerings.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 4G and A52 5G both came to the scene with exciting features delivering improvements on several fronts, including the display, camera, and more, as detailed in our Galaxy A52 review. But reviews can be lengthy, and you may just want to know if the Galaxy A52 4G or A52 5G is waterproof or not.

Is Samsung’s Galaxy A52 Waterproof?

Yes, Samsung Galaxy A52 has an official IP67-rating for dust and water resistance. Its predecessor, the Galaxy A51, did not have enough protection to bag an official IP rating and thus was not waterproof according to the company’s standards.  But what do IP ratings even mean?

IP Ratings Explained

IP stands for ‘Ingress Protection’. IP refers to the degree of protection a case or enclosure offers to prevent the entry of foreign materials. Simply, when your smartphone has an official IP rating, it means that it provides some degree of protection against entry of external materials like dust and water. The degree of protection is usually denoted by terms like IP66, IP67, IP68, and so forth. These ratings indicate if your smartphone is waterproof. But it doesn’t mean a device is totally waterproof; it’s only to a certain degree specified in lab tests. The higher the number, the better the protection. As such, IP68 is better than IP67.

To get an idea of what the numbers mean, you’ll have to know what each stands for. The first digit after IP denotes resistance against foreign particles like dust, while the second denotes water resistance. For instance, the IP67 rating on the Galaxy A52 spec sheet guarantees your device will be safe if immersed in water up to one meter deep and for up to 30 minutes. It sure doesn’t offer as robust protection as IP68, so you shouldn’t be careless with your device either.

IP rating and Water resistance vs. Waterproof

IP rating, as mentioned above, only offers water resistance capability to a certain extent. However, waterproof, on the other hand, literally means that your device is impervious to water. So, no, the Galaxy A52 isn’t fully waterproof. However, it guarantees water resistance up to one meter deep, and for up to 30 minutes, so you can happily dip the Galaxy A52 into the pool as long as you don’t overdo it.

Sports a 6.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It runs on the 8nm Snapdragon 720G paired with up to 8GB of memory and 128GB of internal storage. The A52 is powered by a 4500mAh battery with 25W fast charging support. You get a Quad camera setup and a 32MP selfie camera.

Is the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G waterproof?

Like its 4G variant, Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is water-resistant thanks to its official IP67-rating. You can also have peace of mind if you go swimming with your Galaxy A52 5G as long as you keep in mind the limitations. Besides that, avoid saltwater or ionized water to be safe.

Features an identical display to the 4G variant but runs the Snapdragon 750 5G for 5G support. It's also water-resistant, sports an identical display, camera setup, and battery to the 4G model.

Samsung’s Galaxy A52 4G and A52 5G have an official IP67-rating for both dust and water resistance. If you were planning to go swimming in a pool with either, you could do so without having to worry. With the Galaxy A52 waterproof discussion done and dusted, don’t forget to grab some of the best Galaxy A52 cases to offer protection against drops.

If you’re specifically shopping for waterproof smartphones from Samsung, you’ll be glad to know that the Korean OEM has other alternatives under its portfolio. An excellent place to start is Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S series, including the latest Galaxy S21 series. The Galaxy S21 5G, S21+ 5G, and S21 Ultra 5G, some of 2021’s best Android phones, have an official IP68 rating.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note series also has IP68 rated models starting with 2020’s Note 20 5G and Note 20 Ultra 5G. The previous Note 10, Note 10+, Note 10+ 5G, and Note 8 also have an official IP68 rating against dust and water, including the S Pen.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 leak just revealed lighter design - Tom's Guide

brande.indah.link

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be the lightest entry in the series yet, according to a new tweet from reliable leaker Ice Universe.

In a typically short-form reveal, the leaker simply wrote “Fold3 269g" — two words that give us an interesting bit of intel about the upcoming foldable. If the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 really is 269g (9.48 ounces), it will be the lightest in the range to date, and a promising change of trajectory given that Galaxy Z Fold 2 (282g (9.9 ounces)) was actually heavier than the original Galaxy Fold (9.7 ounces).

To be clear, even at 269g, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is hardly in the featherweight category of smartphones, and in my experience anything over 200g feels a bit on the weighty side in the pocket. For comparison’s sake, that makes it just under 18% heavier than both the iPhone 12 Pro Max (228g, 8.03 ounces) and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (229g, 8.07 ounces), neither of which most people would consider light.

But there are good reasons that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold handsets are heavier than most smartphones: you’re essentially getting both a phone and tablet in one, and that requires more materials across the board: two screens, a structure thick enough to be resilient when unfolded and enough battery to power the thing, to name but a few. With that in mind, it’s an impressive feat of engineering for Samsung to make its flagship foldable's weight comparable to other smartphones.

So why is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 set to be lighter than its predecessors? Well along with the usual generational design improvements, we know that the battery in the new model should be of a slightly lower capacity than its predecessor, clocking in at 4,380mAh, which should shave a little weight from the 4,500mAh cell used in the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected this summer, likely in either July or August and virtually certain to debut alongside the company’s other foldable, the Z Flip 3. Thanks to screenshots supposedly taken from a marketing video, we know that Samsung could include the company’s first under-screen camera, and that the handset will support the S Pen, too.

While we haven’t seen any pricing leaks, given the original Galaxy Fold and sequel cost $1,980 and $1,999 respectively, it would be a huge surprise if the new model cost much less.

Samsung Galaxy A03s stars in a big leak - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

brande.indah.link

One of Samsung's most affordable smartphones, the Galaxy A02s, is reportedly getting a successor with a number of upgrades. It's predictably going to be called Galaxy A03s and the leak includes detailed images and key specs.

Samsung Galaxy A30s Samsung Galaxy A30s Samsung Galaxy A30s
Samsung Galaxy A03s

For starters, the handset will include a side-mounted fingerprint reader and a USB-C port at the bottom, which is a big deal since the predecessor didn't have a fingerprint reader at all and shipped with a dated microUSB.

A 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel will cover the front with a small teardrop notch, where a 5MP camera will reside. The back will feature a 13MP main camera aided by two 2MP units, one probably for depth sensing while the other for macro photography.

We don't have any info regarding price and launch date yet but we'll be on the lookout for more leaks.

Nike Air Force 1 Low Crater Flyknit Covered In Pink - Sneaker News

brande.indah.link

In today’s climate, Nike can’t quite afford to let up on their “Move to Zero” initiatives. And thankfully, they haven’t seemed to slow down as more options — like this upcoming Air Force 1 Crater Flyknit — are continuing to appear.

Here, the silhouette tries something a bit new. Rather than opt for drab palettes, the upper arrives fully bright and floral, rendered near entirely in pink shades. The Swoosh, heel tab, and tongue label, relative to what’s adjacent, are the brightest of the bunch, popping out from the more muted but still colorful Flyknit base. Underfoot, even the midsole finds the perfect tonal complement, though its various scraps still break up the cohesion by a small amount.

For a closer look at these sustainable AF1s, check out the images below. A release should hit Nike.com and possible select retailers soon.

In other news, the White Royal Jordan Pro Strong ushers back the beloved Team Jordan.

brande.indah.link

A Ma Maniére, an Atlanta-based boutique founded by James Whitner, has joined forces with Nike to rework the Air Jordan 3. The sneaker arrives in a clean, minimal design perfect for your casual fits all year round.

Inspired by women and their role in our early lives, Whitner chose to revamp the AJ3 in honor of his mother’s first Jordan silhouette she ever owned. Channeling her generous spirit, the kicks boast several details crafted in her image. Crafted from full-grain, tumbled leather material, the upper comes with high-pile suede overlays dressed in muted shades of gray and “Muslin.” For an added touch of luxury, the pair features silk-like quilted lining on the inside. Elsewhere, the lace aglets feature Whitner’s mantra, “Work Harder,” while each heel tab arrives with Whitner’s mother’s words of wisdom in her original handwriting.

Take a closer look at the piece above. Priced at $200 USD, A Ma ManiĂ©re x Nike’s Air Jordan 3 is now available at select Nike stores in the U.S. and Europe. Nike SNKRS will receive a later launch date of June 10.

The Samsung Tab S8 could come with a huge screen and a giant battery - TechRadar

brande.indah.link

Going off the usual pattern of Samsung product launches, we should be seeing the Galaxy Tab S8 at some point this year – and a survey sent to Samsung users in South Korea has offered up some hints about what the 2021 Android tablet might have in store.

As spotted by @FrontTron, posts on the South Korean social media Naver may have revealed some of the specs of three Galaxy Tab S8 models. Though a user survey is mentioned, it's still not completely clear where these specs come from, so treat them as speculative for the time being.

If the leaked information can be relied upon, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 will be available with an 11-inch, a 12.4-inch, or a giant 14.6-inch display (LCD for the base model and OLED for the other two). The Galaxy Tab S7 has shown up with an 11-inch screen and a 12.4-inch screen, but the biggest size is new.

There's a hefty battery capacity to go along with that massive display: 12,000mAh according to this latest leak. Battery capacity is said to be 8,000mAh on the smallest 11-inch model of the tablet, and 10,090mAh on the 12.4-inch version, which may well be called the Galaxy Tab S8 Plus.

iPad Pro rival

Digging deeper into the predicted specs, the two smaller versions of the Tab S8 are tipped to be coming with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. Your options on the 14.6-inch model are said to be 8GB of RAM and 128GB or storage, or 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage – high end specs indeed.

This move to add a more premium model to the line-up is perhaps prompted by the recent launch of the M1-powered iPad Pro. The most expensive 12.9-inch version of Apple's tablet comes with as much as 16GB of RAM and a maximum storage capacity of 2TB.

It looks as though Wi-Fi, 4G and 5G versions of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 are going to be available, all with 13MP+5MP rear cameras. The standard models are apparently coming with an 8MP selfie camera, while the biggest edition has an 8MP+5MP selfie camera for capturing wider shots.

We've heard very little in the way of Tab S8 leaks up to this point, but the device could launch as soon as August if Samsung sticks to its usual release schedule. August could be a bumper month for Samsung, as we're also expecting the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy S21 FE to make an appearance.

2015’s Nike Air Max CB 94 “Cool Grey” To Return - Sneaker News

brande.indah.link

Few colorways have stood the test of time quite like “Cool Grey.” And with its latest usage, the palette brings even further surprises: a modern retro of the same-colored Air Max CB 94.

Though released in 2015 in kid’s sizes, the pair quite possibly stems even further back to the silhouette’s original line-up. Likely redone for adults, the Charles Barkley signature comes correct in all the right neutral shades. The base starts off the look rather light, while both the lace unit and overlays opt for the darker, titular finish. Soles, fasteners, laces, and the like tonally follow suit, leaving the branding and Air Unit to deviate with white and orange shades, respectively.

For a closer, detailed look, peep the official images below. A release via Nike.com and select retailers should hit very soon.

In other news, an Aleali May Air Jordan 14 Low just popped up.

Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 15.6” Review: The Best Samsung PC Yet | eWEEK - eWeek

brande.indah.link

Earlier this month at Galaxy Unpacked 2021, Samsung launched its new Windows PCs, the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360.

The new Samsung Galaxy Books were a much-anticipated addition to Samsung’s PC lineup. It’s an excellent time for Samsung to launch these new notebooks as it continues to build out a seamless and continuous experience across its smartphone, PC, tablets, and peripheral ecosystem. The PC is a big part of the continuous experience and can serve as an IoT hub for other devices. I spent three days using the Galaxy Book Pro 360 as my primary device for productivity, and below are my thoughts.

System configuration

Samsung sent me a loaner Galaxy Book Pro 360 system to test out on my productivity use case. I opted for the 15.6″ variant because screen real estate matters a lot to me. My test unit came in the Mystic Navy color pattern, but there is also a Mystic Bronze color. I also received a signature S Pen to top off the package, which is included, not optional. My system came with an i7-1165G7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. The Galaxy Book systems were supposed to support LTE and 5G, but early production systems will not support it. I am told that LTE and 5G support will roll out in the second half of the year. My system configuration is available on Samsung.com pre-order for $1499 currently. The Galaxy Book Pro 360 starts at $1,299 with a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage.

The Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 features a remarkably thin design.

First impressions

Right out of the box, I can’t help but notice how thin this system is. When I think of a 15″ notebook, my mind gravitates towards a 15″ workstation-style laptop that is quite heavy, but I sacrifice weight to maximizing my productivity. With the Galaxy Book Pro 360 15.6″, I don’t feel like I have to carry around a clunker to get 15″ of screen real estate. While the system was in my backpack, I felt like I was carrying around a 13″ thin and light notebook. It’s worth mentioning that the Galaxy Book Pros are also the thinnest 13″ and 15″ Intel EVO certified designs. That’s an excellent accomplishment for Samsung as it has made the systems thinner and lighter without sacrificing performance or battery life. Thin and light

do come with trade-offs. There aren’t any HDMI or USB-A ports, but there is always a workaround. I used a USB-C to HDMI cable to connect to an external 24″ display. When I opened the system lid I was received by an aggressive McAfee popup and I also immediately say an Amazon and Booking link. I don’t like seeing these on a $1,500+ premium system, but I suspect that Samsung will likely remove them with next generation.

Mystic Navy is a unique color approach, and it gives off a very premium feel. Its honestly one of my favorite color options that I have used on a notebook. I noticed that the outside of the display lid held on to fingerprints in some instances, but it wasn’t a huge issue for me.

AMOLED touch display

When I opened the lid, I noticed that the AMOLED display was extremely thin and easy to open. Even though the display is 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, it still looks decently sharp and can put off much brightness. There was a bit of graininess on the display because of the lower resolution and large display size with text. A 3K or 4K panel would have been nice, but I am sure battery life would have suffered as a result. Most will be OK with 1920 x 1080 with entertainment content until 4K video content becomes more widely available. I was worried that the thin display wouldn’t hold up the much heavier base when used as a 2-in-1, but I didn’t have any issues in tablet mode. The 360 hinge was easy to rotate over, and I used it several times as a 2-in-1 while streaming long-form video content on YouTube.

I did get the opportunity to try out the S Pen with this system in PC mode and tablet mode, and it performed flawlessly. I used the Pen to sign a few documents, but primarily for scrolling through web pages and switching through applications. The S Pen will connect to the top of the external display via a magnet, but if you plan to keep the system in your backpack, I recommend storing the S Pen separately. The S Pen worked with my S21 Ultra 5G smartphone which was really cool.

One of my favorite display features is the adaptive color you can enable in the display settings. After an entire workday, eye strain can be a big issue for me. I wrote this blog late in the evening, and once the

system detected a lighting change, it increased the adaptive color strength. The adaptive color strength made the display much easier to look at without having to strain my eyes.

Performance

I was happy to see that Samsung beefed this system up with some great hardware solutions. My review system came with the latest 11th Gen Core i7-1165G7 processor. This processor is great for productivity workloads which mirrors my use case. My typical use case includes using a lot of different applications simultaneously. A typical day for me looks like running 10+ Microsoft Edge tabs, video conferencing on Teams, Skype, Zoom and Webex, use G-Suite (now Workspace) collaboration apps to stay in touch with my team of analysts, manipulating data in Excel, and building presentations in PowerPoint. None of these workloads operating alone will tax a system, but together they can often cause lag and stutters and chew through RAM.

The Galaxy Book Pro 360 ran all of my workloads with ease and showed no signs of slowing down. I don’t believe that this system will be a monster for content creation workloads, but for productivity, it is excellent. In terms of video streaming performance, the history content that I watched on YouTube looked sharp. One thing I did notice is that the speakers are on the bottom of the system’s base. I have gotten used to having them on either side of the keyboard, and it was a bit harder to get clean audio compared to other notebooks I have used. I assume Samsung couldn’t place the speakers on the keyboard side because it included a full number pad on the keyboard. Either way, it wasn’t a bad experience using the external speakers.

Ports & I/O

Samsung did a great job given its thickness (or should I say “thinness”) packing many I/O solutions in this system, including 2 USB-C ports, 1 Thunderbolt 4 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a microSD reader. With the addition of Thunderbolt 4, you will be able to transfer data up to 2x faster than you can with traditional USB-C ports. Thunderbolt 4 would be particularly useful for users moving lots of data from their portable hard drives and SD cards to their PC or the cloud. And, of course, users can add an external GPU if they want more heavy-duty gaming. As content continues to scale in resolution doubling your data transfer speeds will be helpful.

The only issue you may encounter with the ports is the lack of legacy USB-A or HMDI. You may be stuck using an adapter in the meantime, but oh well. The PC ecosystem continues to move forward with USB-

C and Thunderbolt, and Samsung future-proofed themselves by providing the latest and greatest I/O solutions.

Keyboard

The backlit Pro keyboard on the Galaxy Book Pro 360 was great to use. I typed this entire 2,000+ word article on the Pro keyboard, and I had no issues with it at all. The keys are buttery smooth and provide a good bit of travel. Samsung was able to fit a full number pad on the right side of the keyboard; although it is a tight squeeze, it’s there. And it’s great for spreadsheets. Samsung did a great job perfecting the mechanics of this keyboard, and as a result, it is a joy to type on. The 1mm of key travel may seem shallow, but I suspect that anyone that spends a lot of time typing will enjoy this keyboard. To access the quick keys users will have to use keys in combination with the FN button which is typically more of an enterprise function. I’m hoping Samsung reverses this in the future so users don’t have to press the “Fn” key. The trackpad on the system is also large and was responsive throughout my usage.

Apart from Windows Hello biometric login, there is a fingerprint reader on the keyboard as well. It’s integrated into the power button on the top right of the keyboard. I set it up in under a minute even, and it was accessible to log in with my thumbprint. I typically prefer Windows Hello, but the options are always great.

Battery life

Samsung claimed that these new Galaxy Book Pro systems would give users up to 21 hours of battery life of general use on a single charge. I typically take any OEM battery claim with a grain of salt as they are usually based on synthetic mobile mark scores. Although I didn’t get the 21 hours advertised, I consistently got 14 to 15 hours of battery life on a single charge while taking the system through my productivity use case.

While Samsung did catch some flak for the lower resolution 1920 x 1080 display, I am confident that this is one of the key contributors to the long battery life on this system. The system also supports 65W fast charging. I tried this out at the end of one of my workdays. I charged the system for around 30 minutes and got several hours of battery life in return.

Samsung apps and integration

Something Samsung has put much time into is making sure the entire ecosystem of Galaxy devices work together cohesively. With that in mind, Samsung wants to have its Galaxy tablets, smartphones, PCs, and peripherals to have access to new applications, including SmartThings, Connect, Quick Share, Samsung Notes, Samsung Gallery, and Galaxy Book Smart Switch. It would have helped if Samsung branded each application as a Samsung app instead of naming some “Samsung Notes” and others “Quick Share.” Nonetheless, the new apps should make switching between Galaxy devices more seamless abd more seamless interactions between Samsung PCs, smartphones, and tablets. One potential pain point is that each application will require you to log in before the first use as a single sign-on isn’t supported. I can see this is good for security, but I’d like a single sign-on option to sync Photos, Notes, and more after I log into the Galaxy Book Experience. I’d love to this added to the initial OOBE.

The application that I used the most was the Samsung Notes app. It was easy for me to jot notes into the app on my Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G and then access them later on my Galaxy Book Pro 360. The automatic syncing feature allows the user to switch between devices easily. I also utilized the Quick Share application quite a bit. All I had to do was select the photo or video I wanted to share, click the share

button on my Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G, and select my Galaxy Book Pro 360. Sharing large files that were shot on my Galaxy phone and quickly sending them to my Galaxy Book is excellent. It sure beats uploading the files to the cloud and then having to download them onto my PC.

Some users may be confused with having two options for certain tasks and will have to choose between Microsoft and Samsung apps. Most Android users are already faced with this and have to choose between Google or Samsung apps so it won’t be as difficult for them. I think the more challenging app selections will be between search (Windows Search vs Samsung Quick Search), photos (Windows Photo vs Samsung Gallery), and notes (Microsoft OneNote vs Samsung Notes). Most every other Samsung app is additive to the experience.

Wrapping up

The Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 feels like the beginning of a more profound commitment to the PC platform from Samsung. As Samsung builds on the continuous experience from one Samsung device to the next, I see the PC platform playing a big part in that as the IoT hub. The Galaxy Book Pro 360 feels like a big step forward for Samsung in the PC space with an ultrathin and light design, powerful hardware, and long battery life.

If Samsung continues to deepen its partnerships with Intel and Microsoft, I can see an improved path for the continuous device experience between tablet, laptop, and smartphone. The Galaxy Book Pro 360 is undoubtedly the best Samsung PC I have ever used. Great job, Samsun
