It looks increasingly likely that Samsung’s Galaxy S21 will arrive early and dramatically redesigned. As 2020 continues to deliver new tech surprises, it seems early 2021 will be no different.
The leaked design, which shows the new Galaxy with a corner-mounted camera bump that wraps around the edge of the device - has baffled some. It doesn’t look like anything we’ve seen before and questions remain about how to grip a phone where one-quarter of the frame is made up of camera sensors. But there may be an upside to the unusual shape.
One of the biggest issues with the Galaxy Note 20, and to a lesser extent the S20, was the huge pill-shaped camera bump on the back of the phone. Both phones are massively imbalanced and top-heavy. For all of the effort Samsung puts into the design of its phones - the satin finish, curved glass - the unwieldy camera bump goes against that grain. Like it was an unfortunate design compromise for powerful camera output.
But the new design appears to solve that somewhat. The renders we’ve seen so far vary between a slight camera bump, to a much flatter bump. Samsung may have pushed the cameras deeper into the phone’s frame and found a way to make space savings elsewhere. The latest round of image leaks from prolific leaker Ice Universe show that Galaxy S21 cases will play a vital role in making the rear of the device more flush. Whereas cases for the S20 and Note 20 are designed around the protruding camera bump, the leaked Galaxy S21 cases have a cutout on one side to make space for the new setup.
The renders aren’t particularly clear, but it does look like - with a case on, and perhaps without - you will be able to lay your Galaxy S21 down flat. It looks flush. The upside of this is that it provides some protection to the snapper without having to add a glass camera protector because the sensors won’t touch a hard surface when lying flat. This is a design technique case makers like MNML use very effectively to protect smartphone cameras.
MORE FOR YOU
Design-wise, it’s also a much nicer experience. This might be my OCD speaking, but a completely flat, flush, phone (and balanced in terms of weight) is more appealing to hold than one that has a hefty piece of metal and glass protruding out of the top. It's a more unified finish that feels more Samsung.
Elsewhere, the early release date is also likely means an earlier launch for Samsung’s next wireless earbuds. The Galaxy Buds Plus launched alongside the Galaxy S20, so it’s reasonable to assume that the new Galaxy Buds “beyond” as Samsung has trademarked them, will land in January too. The Korean company made huge strides with the Galaxy Buds Live, which released in August, thanks to their unusual - but surprisingly effective - bean-shape design.
The Galaxy Buds Plus dramatically improved on battery in comparison to their predecessors, so it will be interesting to see if the headphones add new functionality or change in terms of design like Apple’s next AirPods will.
The price of the new earbuds, alongside the Galaxy S21, will be interesting to see. Samsung hinted in the Galaxy S20 FE press release that the competitive price was related to the new economic reality of the pandemic. In a recent statement to ZDNet Korea, Samsung also said something similar about a changing "market environment" in relation to release dates. Competition for your tech purchases in 2020 is intense, so expect more deals from Samsung to come.
