Fresh Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Details Emerge - Forbes

Devices records likely to represent the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and other upcoming Samsung wearables have been published by the FCC, as spotted by GSMArena, revealing a little more about these watches.

Four new Samsung products have appeared in the database of the FCC, a US agency that deals with communications devices such as phones and wearables.

They bear the SM-R880, SM-R890, SM-R860 and SM-R870 model numbers. Those first two are likely to represent two flavors of Galaxy Watch 4. The last two may refer to Galaxy Watch Active models, which are usually slightly cheaper and more sports-oriented in their design.

What do the FCC logs tell us? Samsung’s next watches will have dual-band Wi-Fi, wireless charging, Bluetooth and GNSS, which almost certainly means GPS — a surprise to no-one at this point.

The watches will also have NFC, used in wearables primarily to allow for wireless payments.

Why two different models for the same product? As in previous generations, Samsung is likely to offer Watch-series wearables with and without 4G mobile internet.

The FCC listing also has references to an “Spiral ANT” component. A little further digging suggests this is not an ANT+ chip, which some fitness gadget fans may hope for, but an ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna.

UWB features in the Galaxy S21 series phones, and the same core technology powers Apple’s AirTags. This will be used by Samsung’s SmartThings Find device locator feature. The Galaxy Watch 3 already has UWB, so this is no grand change.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 will be an incredibly important watch for the company, though, as it is expected to run the new version of Google’s Wear software rather than Samsung-owned Tizen.

Samsung will reportedly announce the Galaxy Watch on August 11.
