Samsung accidentally published details of a new, yet-to-be-released, tablet range on its German product page yesterday.
Spotted by WinFuture, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE (Fan Edition) will replace the Galaxy Tab Lite range. If the "Fan Edition" branding sounds familiar, it’s the same as 2020's surprise Galaxy S20 FE that launched as a cheaper version of the flagship S20 earlier in the year. Whilst the device had some display issues, the combination of a low-price and top-end hardware made it a popular handset.
Clearly Samsung is looking to build on that success with the new tablet, but the specification list isn’t as impressive as its smartphone counterpart. For a start, the 12.4-inch FHD display will be an LCD panel, rather than OLED, with a 60Hz refresh rate.
For a new 2021 Samsung device, even a budget one, that’s surprisingly low-end. The S20 FE had a FHD OLED display and a 120Hz refresh rate. Although the handset suffered serious touch-input issues, which might have been down to Samsung trying to do 120Hz cheaply, as a repair expert I spoke with explained. The Korean company could be trying to avoid similar problems with the Tab S7 FE.
MORE FOR YOU
Elsewhere there’s a Qualcomm 750G processor, 4GB of RAM, expandable storage and a 10,090mAh battery. There’s also a 8MP rear camera and 5MP selfie snapper. The large battery and FHD display cements the device’s midrange specifications, but the low amount of RAM is slightly concerning - even the S20 FE had a minimum of 6GB.
The good news is that the S Pen comes included, which is the main reason Samsung’s tablets are fun to use. I use my Tab S7+ for video editing using KineMaster, which is designed for quick mobile editing. Video editing requires a decent amount of dexterity that isn’t always possible with your fingers, so the S Pen is particularly handy here. Check out some of my work.
Most creative mobile apps are designed to work on as many phones as possible and they don’t always have high specification requirements - so those S7 FE’s specs should be passable. The large battery and power efficient display will be a huge bonus for creative work, too. The new budget device is priced at €649 (roughly $795, but the US price won’t be a direct conversion and likely a lot less than that) and there’s no concrete release date yet.
The tablet shares the FE branding of the budget S20 smartphone, but the specifications don’t. Samsung does, however, know how to do the tablet experience well, particularly with its S Pen technology, so if the Korean company can keep the price down, there’s a decent chance this could be a good entry-level tablet from a largely reliable range.
