Hot on the heels of Apple's Spring Loaded event—which saw the unveiling of a new iPad Pro and iMac, among other gadgets—Samsung held its own product launch called Galaxy Unpacked on Wednesday, April 28. There was much speculation about what the mobile brand had up its sleeve, and the answer turned out to be, just as we had guessed, some fresh Galaxy Book laptops.

You’d be forgiven for barely even being aware of the fact that Samsung has a line of Galaxy laptops—they’re not as popular as some of Samsung’s other Galaxy mobile devices—but with this year’s release, it looks like Samsung might be trying to change that. The new Galaxy Books look likely to turn some heads.

Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360

Though there were four models announced at the event, the hottest news centers on the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360. These laptops will run the latest 11th generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and the Iris Xe graphics chipset. As for wireless, Samsung has tried to future-proof the laptops with Wi-Fi 6E, though it may be some time before you encounter a Wi-Fi 6E router to take advantage of the performance. They’re also LTE-compatible for operation independent of Wi-Fi entirely.

Galaxy Book Pro

The Galaxy Book Pro is a traditional clamshell laptop, available in both 13.3-inch and 15.6 inch sizes and will offer AMOLED full-HD displays. Samsung says that it’ll use smart color tuning to calibrate the display to your environment, and AKG speakers will offer Dolby Atmos surround sound audio. For web conferencing, the 720p webcam is complemented by noise-cancelling microphones.

Galaxy Book Pro 360

The Galaxy Book Pro 360 is a 2-in-1 convertible that you can use as a laptop or flip around into a tablet. Both of these new laptops carry Intel’s Evo label, which means they meet a slew of heightened performance requirements. You can expect as much as 16 hours of battery life, an 8-hour quick charge in 30 minutes, and the ability to wake from sleep in less than a second.

But what sets these laptops apart is the effort that Samsung appears to have put into making them a seamless part of the Galaxy family and following thorough on a “mobile first” strategy. A new Airdrop-like feature called Quick Share lets you instantly transfer images and files between the Galaxy Book and other Galaxy devices almost as seamlessly as Jack Bauer used to ask Chloe to “send it to my screen” on the TV show 24. And the laptops will automatically pair with Galaxy Buds without needing to select them.

Preordering the Galaxy Book Pro or Pro 360

The Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 will be available for purchase beginning May 14. But you can preorder the Galaxy Book Pro right now—the 13-inch screen starts at $1,000, and the 15.6-inch version starts at $1,100.

The Galaxy Book Pro 360 is also available for preorder now. The 13-inch starts at $1,200, and the Galaxy Book Pro 360 with a 15.6-inch screen starts at $1,300.

Samsung is dangling some incentives for preordering by May 13. If you order through Amazon, Samsung will give you a $150 credit; a pre-order at Best Buy will net you a $150 gift certificate; and if you preorder directly from Samsung, you get either a $150 eCertificate or free Galaxy Buds Pro.

And if you actually buy a Galaxy Book Pro between May 14 and May 30, you’re eligible for $100 in credit through Amazon, Best Buy or Samsung (depending upon where you bought it).

Also Coming: Samsung Galaxy Book and Galaxy Book Flex2 α

Samsung had a lot to talk about at Galaxy Unpacked, including two other laptops which will be coming soon as well. The Samsung Galaxy Book, as the name suggests, is the baseline model in the updated family, offering many of the same enhancements, like an 11th generation Intel Core CPU, all-day battery life and deep integration with the Galaxy family at a more modest price. The Galaxy Book will be available in the second half of 2021 with a price estimated to start around $800.

Similarly, Samsung announced the Galaxy Book Flex2 α—an ultra-slim 2-in-1 convertible with a QLED display. It, too, will sport an 11th Gen Intel Core processor, all-day battery and connectivity with the rest of the Galaxy family. It’s expected to be available for preorder soon with availability on May 14, but we don’t yet have details on how to preorder or purchase it.
