  • Company also commits to 70% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in owned or operated facilities

Nike has unveiled a new five-year roadmap for global impact as the US sportswear giant looks to build out a more diverse and inclusive organisation.

For the first time, Nike will tie executive compensation to the company’s progress in deepening diversity and inclusion, protecting the planet, and advancing ethical manufacturing.

A pillar of the US sportswear giant’s Purpose 2025 Targets includes a commitment to gender equality. Nike has set itself the goal of having 50 per cent representation of women in the company’s global corporate workforce and 45 per cent in leadership positions.

Nike also plans to maintain 100 per cent pay equity across all employee levels on an annual basis through 2025, and increase its investments focused on professional development for racial and ethnic minorities in the US and women globally.

The company notably came under fire in 2019 over its pregnancy policy for athletes. US Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix was among those to criticise Nike, stating that the brand wanted to pay her 70 per cent less after her pregnancy in 2018.

Nike has subsequently updated its policy, meaning a pregnant athlete will not be hit by any performance-related reductions for 18 months.

The brand has also revealed a series of climate pledges through to 2025. These include a 70 per cent absolute reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in owned or operated facilities through 100 per cent renewable electricity and fleet electrification.

Nike adds that to meet its ‘2030 Science-Based Target’, the company needs to reduce its carbon footprint by 65 per cent in owned or operated spaces and by 30 per cent across its extended supply chain.

The Purpose 25 Targets follows the Nike Impact Report, which represents the brand’s final performance update on its 2020 targets and measures. At the close of last year, Nike stated that women now make up 50 per cent of its total employee base and in the US people from under-represented groups now make up 29 per cent of its leaders at the vice president level.

The brand also used 100 per cent renewable energy in the US and Canada for its owned and operated sites.

“We’re proud of the successes we’ve seen, but we know the work is still just beginning,” said Nike chief executive John Donahoe.

“We will continue to strive to lower emissions across our key operations, to shrink our product carbon footprint, to accelerate diversity and inclusion across our teams, to enable kids to have access to play and sport. We will always challenge ourselves to do better. Always.

He continued: “Our goal is, and always will be, for Nike’s people and purpose to come together for good. At Nike, we’ll never stop striving for better. Our purpose will always guide us, and our values will always push us forward – toward that better future we believe in.”
