With four Galaxy S phones, three Flips, two Notes and six A series phones from Samsung, where do you even get started?

There are some 15 Galaxy phones available this year, seemingly at every price point, from $99 to $1,999.

In a nutshell, the lower-priced phones use cheaper parts and have weaker cameras. The mid-tier devices have more features, and the really expensive ones have bigger bodies, better cameras and do things the cheap ones don't – specifically, bend or flip.

Samsung's Galaxy S series phones get the attention, but worldwide it's the A series that dominates the charts. According to researcher Canalys, Samsung had four of the top 10 smartphones in 2019, with three As and one S, the Galaxy S10.

Here in the United States, though, the retail stores and wireless carriers emphasize the S phones, though if you look hard, you'll find various A models at Best Buy, Walmart and other retailers.

So if you're looking for a good phone on the Android operating system from the No. 1 worldwide manufacturer of smartphones – nearly 300 million of the 1.5 billion sold in 2019 – let's run down the offerings.

Samsung smartphones in $100 range

The entry-level phone Galaxy A01 has a 5.7-inch screen, comes with a very small storage of 16 GB and has the same camera as older phones: one on the front for selfies and another on the back. The step-up A11, which starts at $179.99, has a 6.4-inch display and 32 GB of storage.

Smartphones in the $250 range

The A21 has a 6.5-inch screen, 32 GB of storage and two camera lenses, wide and ultrawide. This phone sports a longer-lasting battery, fingerprint ID on the touchscreen, but a measly 32 GBs of storage, which won't last very long. However, Samsung offers expandable storage with an optional 512GB micro-SD card, which sells from $40 to $75, depending upon the speed.

Phones under $500

The A51 and A51 5G are the Samsung phones that rank as the company's bestselling phones, not the S series. The A50, the previous edition, was Samsung's top seller for 2019. The $399 A51 has a 6.5-inch display, the quad cam and 128 GB of memory, while the $599 edition connects to newer, faster wireless 5G networks

Phones for about $600

The A71 is similar to the A51 series, except the screen is even larger, at 6.7 inches. It does have a longer-lasting battery and more RAM. Both phones have expandable storage, which takes them from 128 GB to 1 terabyte with an accessory micro-SD card. But those aren't cheap, starting at just over $200.

Phones for about $700

The Galaxy S FE is the entry-level in the S series and it has two big differences from the more expensive models: a cheaper plastic body and fewer camera features.

The FE, with a 6.5-inch screen, has a more powerful processor than the A71, and a higher refresh rate, which means that video and games load quicker. The FE camera has 3X optical zoom, compared to 5X on the top of the line Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, holiday priced at $1,199. The optical is true zoom, compared to lower-resolution digital zoom, which basically just crops the image and blows it up.

Samsung phones priced about $999

The $999 Galaxy S20 5G, the successor to last year's S10 models, is the step-up model from the FE, albeit with a smaller screen (6.2 inches) and three camera lenses to the two on the FE. It only connects to the slower, lower-range flavors of 5G

Samsung also has the Note series, which was long Samsung's biggest phone, known for having a popular stylus pen for saving the stress on your fingers and giving you a tool to make, yup, notes.

This year's editions include the $999 Note 20 5G, the smaller of the Note phones, which were originally considered to be "phablets" because they were so big. This Note clocks in at 6.7 inches, the same size as the Galaxy S20+ phone.

Phones priced about $1,119 to $1,299

The S20+ has a larger screen than the S20, at 6.7 inches and it connects to the ultra-fast "Millimeter Wave" flavor of 5G that's offered by Verizon. It also has a larger, longer-lasting battery and sells for $1,119.

The Note20 Ultra 5G has a giant size 6.9-inch screen, more RAM than the smaller Note (12 GB vs. 8), a larger, longer-lasting battery and expandable storage, which the smaller Note does not have.

Z Flip. The new take on the old fashioned flip phone has two more key features than the more expensive version. As in two camera lenses to one on the Z Flip Ultra.

Phones priced about $1,399 to $1,449

The Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G is the largest S20 phone clocking in at 6.9 inches. It also boasts the biggest, longest-lasting battery in the series, the claim of "10x" zoom to get closer to the action, and access to the "Millimeter" wave 5G.

The Z Flip 5G has one camera lens, versus two on the cheaper version, but it can also connect to the supposedly faster, 5G wireless networks.

... and for $2,000

The biggest and most expensive Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, is the successor to 2019's Z Fold, and it's $10 more than the previous edition. This is the camera that fits nice and snug in your pocket, and when you open it or unfold the device, it grows to 7.6 inches.
