How big is too big a diamond? Louis Vuitton wants you to decide. The French luxury goods house just landed a mega 549-carat diamond that it will cut and fashion into bespoke jewels for its clients. A stone of this size is expected to yield multiple diamonds of different shapes.
Louis Vuitton has recently become a serious player in big diamonds. Earlier this year, it agreed to acquire the exceptional 1,758-carat Sewelô rough diamond from Lucara Diamond Corp. But this latest acquisition illustrates how the brand also wants to shift the way diamonds are produced, designed, and sold. By landing the rough diamond straight from mine and enlisting HB Antwerp to help produce the stone, Louis Vuitton is inviting its clients to become part of the diamond journey, a process with complete transparency from the mine to the finished design, and one where they can customize the cut and jewel. It’s the ultimate in personalization.
The new diamond has been named the Sethunya, meaning "flower" in Setswana, the main language spoken at the Botswana mine where it was recovered. It’s also a nod to Louis Vuitton’s emblematic Monogram flower.
The stone, believed to be 1-2 billion years old, was discovered earlier this year at Lucara’s Karowe mine, the world’s most important source of top-quality, large diamonds, including the house’s Sewelô rough diamond. The Lucara mine uses cutting-edge technology which identifies large diamond ore before it goes through the standard crushing process. That’s how it is recovering these exceptionally large diamonds, which up until recently, were a rare occurrence.
If you're considering a made-to-order diamond jewel, Louis Vuitton will be bringing the Sethunya and the Sewelo on a world tour so its VIP clients can meet with diamond experts and designers to consider their options. Because a diamond is never too big, is it?
