There’s always an ad that everyone seems to be talking about—and it feels like half the time, it’s from Nike. Watch “You Can’t Stop Us” here.
- Wieden + Kennedy Portland, Pulse Films director Oscar Hudson, and the visual effects team at A52 went through 4,000 sports action sequences and chose just 72 of them for this commercial.
- Video editors combined that footage into 36 split-screen moments in which the characters on either side of the screen seem to become one.
But other than what some have called “an editing marvel,” here’s what made the spot work...now more than ever *sigh*.
Sports: Fans are irrationally psyched for pro sports to return. Turner Sports recently sold out of ad inventory for the very same NBA restart this Nike spot celebrates.
LGBTQ+ ⭐s: Megan Rapinoe, the lesbian U.S. National Women’s Soccer League player, voiced the spot and appears in a few of the clips. 68% of non-LGBTQ+ people feel better about buying products from brands that include queer representation in campaigns.
Social justice: Studies show consumers prefer ads touching social issues, hence the copywriting by the Wieden + Kennedy team about athletes coming together for change.
+1: There’s currently a “Black Nike Employees Matter” protest going on that includes a list of demands from employees, mostly aimed at closing an alleged gap between Nike's promotional spots and its HR practices.
