Nike is cutting at least 500 jobs at its headquarters near Beaverton, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with the state Thursday.
The workforce reduction includes some members of the company’s corporate leadership team, as well the permanent closure of several child care centers. The child-care closures will impact 192 employees.
Job separations are expected to begin Oct. 1.
Nike employees knew downsizing was imminent. The company’s new CEO and president, John Donahoe, has sought a reorganization to streamline operations. Nike’s “Consumer Direct Acceleration” strategy prioritizes direct online sales to consumers.
The company has also said it would narrow its focus to three product categories – men’s, women’s and kids'.
Nike had roughly 77,000 employees worldwide prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
The athletic wear company reported a net loss and decreased sales last quarter as the pandemic shuttered stores around the world.
