Nike closes childcare facilities for employees’ children, plans to offer alternatives - OregonLive

Nike is closing its childcare facilities and scrapping plans to move forward with an off-site daycare center close to its world headquarters near Beaverton.

The company informed employees last week that it was shutting down the Nike Child Development Program, a subsidized daycare program available to parents at its world headquarters, and laying off the faculty and staff that worked for the program.

Instead, Nike will shift its childcare strategy to expand childcare support to thousands of employees across its U.S. locations, said spokesman Greg Rossiter. The company plans to provide employees with further details this fall.

“We are expanding our childcare benefit from hundreds to thousands of employees, including, for the first time, our teammates in Retail, Distribution Centers and Air Manufacturing Innovation,” Rossiter wrote in an email to The Oregonian/OregonLive. “This shift means we made the difficult decision to close the Nike Child Development centers and say goodbye to our NCDP faculty and staff.”

Nike announced last year that it would close its on-site childcare facilities and replace them with an off-campus facility in partnership with Endeavor Schools. The announcement triggered backlash at the time from employees who preferred the on-site option.

Rossiter said Tuesday that the company was no longer moving forward with that partnership as it turned its focus to its new childcare strategy.

More than 500 families were enrolled in the Nike Child Development Program and another 500 were on a waitlist for the program as of June 2019.
